looking at results for past years the GFT has a higher percent of finishers above 14-15 hrs & DNF relative to other races --is this because of more newbies or race difficulty |

FM: A word to the wise is sufficient, as my 7th grade English teacher, Ms. Wise, always said. Don't underestimate the bike course because it's in "flat" Florida. As the website says, there are several short steep hills in the first several miles. That probably accounts for the 14-15 hour finish time. |

Sorry for the technical glitches. I'm working on getting a couple of bugs out of the system now. |

When I saw your name, Fred, I thought you were going to give some advice about the course!!! We appreciate everything you're doing to keep the site up and running and giving us a place to share information! Thanks! Pixie |

Fe Man, Why so many 14-15 hour finishers? Good question. Maybe to due to numbers of first timers. Did you check the bike splits? The swim splits are probably about what you'd expect, but the bike splits are the real teller. The hills really take their toll on alot of us. We're not talking a few rollers, either. Lots of turns to go with it, too. Like I said you'll be going through your gears pretty regularly. Throw in the heat and wind, and there you have it. (I believe in the '06 race, we had temps of 115+ on the bike.) And then throw in a marathon after that, it turns to survival of the fittest. |

KAR I'm actually looking for a race with a bunch of other first times to fit in! in both experience and time, something lie the B2B claims they are practice for Kona which is far from my goals. I am conquering this mountain, not winning it. |

FM: You'll do fine. It sounds like you have the right training plan and the right attitude. |

FM: No idea! The set up is a little different. Can't post on the actual forum now, just at the huts. It's a work in progress! Are you doing Gulf Coast Tri. tomorrow? |

Last year's 2 lap bike course was one of the toughest GFT had, IMO, with hills early and late in the course. With near record heat and a good amount of wind too, it took me an hour longer than I thought it would and I think ~30% of the field DNFd. The 2010 bike course sounds like it's going back to something like the 2008 bike course where the second half is mostly flat. I would think there should be fewer DNFs this year and race times should be faster too but nothing is guaranteed in an ironman. |

sounds like a Hobsons choice between the potential heat and wind at the GFT or my other choice has possibiility of cold and rain on the coast in November at B2B |

I did B2B last year too and finished over 2 hours faster there. It was pretty cold for Floridians (40-60 degs) but the bike course is FLAT and I don't think rain would've made much difference unless you're someone who gets psyched out riding in rain and were not dressed properly (much more difficult to ride a hilly course like GFT in pouring rain, IMO). B2B can be windy though and last year we had an annoying headwind the last ~40 miles as it's nearly a straight shot back to town after reaching the northernmost point. B2B is definitely a much easier course, esp. with a swim that is with the incoming current, but if you want a real challenge GFT is the one to do. I'm much more proud of my 15hr GFT finish than I am of my 12:45 at B2B. |
